7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Lemosho Route

Day 1 of the Lemosho Route marks the official beginning of the Mount Kilimanjaro climb and offers a gentle introduction to the mountain. After an early morning drive from Moshi or Arusha, climbers arrive at Lemosho Gate, located on the remote western side of Kilimanjaro. Here, formal registration with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities is completed while porters and guides organize equipment and supplies. Once formalities are finished, the trek begins through the lush montane rainforest, one of the most scenic ecosystems on the mountain. The trail is wide and well-defined, gradually ascending through dense vegetation. Towering trees draped in moss and lichen create a green canopy overhead, while ferns, wildflowers, and vines line the forest floor. The air is fresh and often humid, with occasional mist adding to the magical forest atmosphere. As you walk, there is a strong possibility of encountering wildlife. Black-and-white colobus monkeys are frequently seen leaping through the treetops, and blue monkeys may appear along the trail. Birdlife is abundant, making this section particularly enjoyable for nature lovers. The pace on Day 1 is intentionally slow and steady, allowing the body to begin adjusting to altitude. Guides emphasize the principle of “pole pole” (slowly, slowly), setting the rhythm for successful acclimatization in the days ahead. After several hours of gradual ascent, the trail emerges into a small clearing where Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, is located. The camp is named after the large trees that once dominated the area and is nestled within the rainforest, offering a sheltered and peaceful setting for the first night on the mountain. Upon arrival, the camp crew has already set up tents. Climbers have time to rest, wash, and enjoy their first hot meal prepared by the mountain cook. As evening falls, temperatures cool, and the sounds of the forest surround the camp, creating a calm and immersive wilderness experience. Day 1 is relatively short and not physically demanding, making it an ideal introduction to Kilimanjaro. It sets the foundation for the journey ahead, both physically and mentally, as climbers settle into mountain life and prepare for higher elevations in the coming days.
