Important information

What to Bring

Light cotton clothing suitable for very hot daytime temperatures

Warm jacket or sweater for the evening and night at Erta Ale’s summit (it can get chilly despite the desert climate)

Comfortable hiking shoes or boots for walking on rocky volcanic terrain

Hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen for protection from intense sun

Headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries (essential for the night trek to Erta Ale)

Personal toiletries and wet wipes (facilities are very basic in the desert)

Light sleeping bag or blanket (mattresses are provided at campsites, but extra comfort is recommended)

Swimsuit and towel for swimming in Lake Afdera and hot springs

Camera or smartphone with power bank to capture the unique landscapes

Reusable water bottle (drinking water is provided, but it’s good to refill and carry during hikes)

Important Information

The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest places on Earth, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F). Guests should be prepared for heat and dry conditions.

Facilities along the route are very basic. Camping is done in open air with simple mattresses; showers and toilets are minimal.

The hike to Erta Ale involves a 9.5 km (3-hour trek) each way over rocky and sandy terrain. Travelers should be in good physical condition.

Security escorts from local Afar police and militia are required in the Danakil region and will accompany the group for safety.

Camel caravans are still used to carry supplies to Erta Ale; this is part of the adventure and traditional desert lifestyle.

Electricity and mobile signal are limited or unavailable during most of the trip; please plan accordingly.

Meals are freshly prepared by the support team, but dietary restrictions should be communicated in advance.

Travel insurance covering adventure travel is strongly recommended.

Travelers should bring any personal medication, as pharmacies are limited in remote areas.
