1-Day Bagamoyo Historical Site Tour

We will use a private car, and then visit the Pwani region. Start your day at Bagamoyo Museum, located within the old German Boma (administrative building). This museum provides an excellent overview of Bagamoyo's history, covering the slave trade, German colonial rule, missionary activities, and local culture. It helps set the context for the sites you'll visit. Later, you will visit the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe). Walk to the nearby Old Fort, a structure with a long history of various uses, including a prison and slave holding area. It offers a tangible connection to the past. In the afternoon Visit the German Boma Ruins. Explore the ruins of the original German colonial administrative headquarters. While mostly ruins, it gives a sense of the former colonial power. After lunch, you will visit the old Slave Market Site, a somber reminder of the thousands of people who passed through here on their way to Zanzibar and beyond. This was the first Catholic mission in East Africa and played a significant role in attempting to stop the slave trade by buying slaves' freedom.
