Drive to Lake Afdera for a refreshing stop: you can swim and relax in the salt waters. The lake is fringed by palm trees, providing welcome shade, and you can watch traditional salt harvesting and visit Franchetti Island, one of the world’s lowest-lying islands. Continue to Erta Ale, the (Smoking Mountain), passing vast fields of solidified lava before arriving at the Erta Ale campsite. In the evening, trek to the crater rim to see the glowing lava lake. Overnight camp.
