Experience the changing desert landscape of the Kalahari desert as we track thoughts south of Namibia.
A vast basin in the interior of Africa south of the equator, the Kalahari reaches into part of Namibia from its heartland in Botswana, with a mantle of parched sand that in places is over 300m deep. Virtually devoid of stones and surface rock, it is the largest expanse of loose sand in the world, with a total area of about 900 000km2.
The Kalahari sands cover much of eastern Namibia and widen towards the north to encompass the Caprivi Strip in the east and the Etosha Pan in the west. Within southern Africa, Kalahari is popularly characterized as a desert, but little of it really is. Only the southernmost part of Namibia, with an average rainfall of 150-250 mm per year, is dry enough to warrant the description. The rest is semi-desert. Rainfall in Kalahari is seasonal, infrequent, patchy, and highly variable. Evaporation rates far exceed actual precipitation as summers are extremely hot. The amount gradually increases northward and eastward, to as much as 700 mm in the furthest corners of the Caprivi, but the greater part of the Namibian Kalahari gets less than 600 mm per year.
The Iconic Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground in the south of Namibia will take you back in time for Dionosores.
The Giants playground consists mainly of weathered dolerite dylcers that belong to the Keetmanshoop dolerite complex.
The geological landscape of the south has given birth to the Fish river canyon, the second largest canyon in the world from the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.
In the southern corner of Namibia, there is the town of Ludrizt which stands in isolation on a great frontier between the desert and ocean.
The welcoming sign for Kolmanskop is something that cannot be missed, Kolmanskop was the first town to be built in the Namib desert.
after the diamonds were discovered in 1908.
The attraction of the Namib landscape comes with its troweling sand dunes of Sossusvlei, Implesiver Dune 45, Deadvlei, and Sesreim Canyon.
