The Rongai Route is one of the least frequented of Kilimanjaro routes, with few climbers about and for the most of the trek walking through virgin wilderness and awe inspiration scenery. It is the only route to the summit of Kilimanjaro that begins on the northern part, near Kenya boarder. It is windier and dried with less vegetation, so from far overlooking the beautiful landscape of Kenyan plains.
Starting from the Rongai gate, the route traverses several diverse climate zones, and each produces its own amazing views and experiences. Because of its remote location the route offers trekkers a relatively unspoiled wilderness experience where it is possible to see large wildlife such as antelope, elephant, buffalo and more. Heading up to Kikulewa Caves on day two, the views start to open up, with the Amboseli Plains of Kenya stretching into the distance. The route continues up to the mountain’s second summit at Mawenzi before crossing the Saddle, a barren plain that connects the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. After reaching the summit, the descent is along the more heavily travelled Marangu route, so offering the chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro from both sides; and is one of the best route to attempt Kilimanjaro during rainy season as it sees substantially less rain than the southern routes.
The entire route takes 6 days, though, can add an additional one day, which is highly recommended. An extra day gives the body more time to get used to the altitude (acclimatize) and increase the chance to reach the top of Kilimanjaro without experiencing any altitude sickness.
