Report:How I did Sossusvlei as a solo traveller on a budget
Posting this to help other backpackers who are travellng solo on a budget and car rental is out of their budget. Any 3 day 2 night tour of the sand dunes at Sossusvlei that I found was minimum 8,000NAD or about 400 euro which is way out of my budget. Some tours are with lodge accomodation are $13,000. So here is how I did it for around 3,000NAD or 150 euro. Shuttle by company Namibia 2 Go from Swapkopmund to the petrol station at Seisrem $690 Walk 5 minutes to the Oasis campste, 2 nights camping at 175 per night= $350 Tour of the dunes by the Adventure Company who have an office at Sossusvlei Lodge which is just 5 minutes walk from the petrol station at Sesriem. Tour was 7am to 1.30pm and the price included park entry and a very nice breakfast at the end of the 2x4 tarred road. We visited Dune 45, a few lookout points and then the guide gave us 2 hours to climb Big Daddy dune and then another 40 minutes to explore Deadvlei before he showed us Sossusvlei in the 4x4. The two guides were very professional and informative about the dunes and geology. Cost $1,100 or $950 if you dont want the breakfast. You can also add on a Sesriem Canyon tour for $450 which departs at 4pm each day Namibia 2 Go shuttle the next day, pick up was at the petrol station at 1pm, arrived in Windhoek at 5.30pm. Cost $690 Total cost was $2,850 and then I gave the tours guides a $150 tip because they deserved it for excellent service. So $3,000 alrogether which is a lot cheaper than the 3 day tours. The only thing I missed out on that the 3 day tours do is a stop at the Tropic of Capricorn sign and a visit to the cheetah sancturary at a small village called Solitare. Everything else I visited is the same. Additioinal costs for food were minimal, the petrol station at Sesriem has rolls, sandwiches for $30 each and also sausage rolls for $20. On the second night I bought a sirloin steak for $70 and cooked it on the braai at a neighbours campsite as Im backpacking so cant carry wood or charcoal. All up this is a good budget way of doing it without paying the high prices of the 3 day tours. Hope this helps others.
