Because Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island and has limited road infrastructure, most tour packages are organized into "Circuits." Here are the four most popular types of itineraries.

1. The Classic South (RN7 Route)

Best for: First-timers, diverse landscapes, and hiking.

  • Duration: 10–14 Days
  • Route: Antananarivo → Antsirabe → Ambositra → Ranomafana NP → Isalo NP → Tuléar → Ifaty.
  • Highlights:
    • Ranomafana: Rainforest trekking for Golden Bamboo Lemurs.
    • Isalo National Park: Stunning Jurassic sandstone formations, natural pools, and canyons.
    • Anja Reserve: The best place to see Ring-tailed Lemurs up close.
  • The Vibe: A mix of highlands, rainforests, and desert canyons, ending with a beach stay in the south.

2. The Baobabs & Tsingy (Western Circuit)

Best for: Photography and adventure seekers.

  • Duration: 8–10 Days
  • Route: Morondava → Avenue of the Baobabs → Kirindy Forest → Tsingy de Bemaraha.
  • Highlights:
    • Avenue of the Baobabs: Iconic sunset photography.
    • Tsingy de Bemaraha: A UNESCO site featuring "forests" of sharp limestone needles and hanging bridges.
    • Kirindy: Home to the Fossa (Madagascar’s top predator) and giant jumping rats.
  • Note: This circuit is for 4x4 vehicles and is usually accessible only from May to November.

3. The Northern Luxury & Nature (Nosy Be Circuit)

Best for: Honeymooners, divers, and families.

  • Duration: 7–12 Days
  • Route: Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) → Amber Mountain → Ankarana → Nosy Be.
  • Highlights:
    • Red Tsingy: Unique red laterite formations.
    • Amber Mountain: A volcanic massif with waterfalls and rare chameleons.
    • Nosy Be: World-class snorkeling, diving, and "island hopping" to Nosy Komba or Nosy Iranja.
  • The Vibe: More upscale, easier logistics, and the best beaches in the country.

4. The Lush East (The Canal des Pangalanes)

Best for: Rare wildlife and slow travel.

  • Duration: 6–10 Days
  • Route: Antananarivo → Andasibe-Mantadia → Canal des Pangalanes → Île Sainte-Marie.
  • Highlights:
    • Andasibe-Mantadia: The best place to hear the haunting call of the Indri (the largest lemur).
    • Palmarium Reserve: Famous for the rare, nocturnal Aye-aye.
    • Île Sainte-Marie: A pirate history hub and the best humpback whale watching in the world (July–Sept).

What’s Typically Included in a Package?

1. Transport: A 4x4 vehicle with a dedicated driver/guide (essential due to road conditions). 2. Internal Flights: Madagascar's national airline (Madagascar Airlines) is often used to jump between the North, West, and the Capital. 3. National Park Fees: Entry permits and mandatory local park guides. 4. Accommodation: Ranging from "Eco-lodges" (rustic but charming) to high-end luxury resorts in Nosy Be.

Estimated Costs (USD)

  • Budget/Mid-range: $1,500 – $2,500 per person (12 days, excluding international flights).
  • Luxury: $4,000 – $7,000+ per person (High-end lodges and private charter flights).

Pro Tip

Always look for packages that include a private driver-guide. Public transport (Taxi-brousse) is extremely slow and unreliable for tourists with a limited schedule.
