What are your thoughts on traveling to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia?

My wife and I are planning a trip to Kuwait later this year, and one of our flight options involves a 13 hour, full-day connection in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We thought it could be a cool way to add an extra city/country to our trip, hire a local tour guide for the day, and see a city we'd likely never find ourselves in otherwise. However, I'm also aware there are potential safety and security implications here. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Anyone with recent experience there?
