The Great Migration: Nature’s Greatest Wildlife Journey

The Great Migration is much more than animals moving from one place to another. It is a huge, year-round natural cycle involving millions of animals, changing seasons, predators, rainfall, rivers and grasslands across the Serengeti Mara ecosystem. The annual cycle January–March — Southern Serengeti & Ndutu Large herds concentrate on the nutrient-rich plains. This is the main calving period, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born over the broader season. The abundance of young animals also attracts predators. April–May — Central & Western Serengeti As the southern plains begin to dry, many herds start moving northwest. Large columns of wildebeest and zebras can spread across the Serengeti. June–July — Western & Northern Serengeti The migration continues north. Some groups encounter rivers, including the Grumeti, before moving toward northern Serengeti. July–October — Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara This period is famous for possible Mara River crossings. Herds may cross between Tanzania and Kenya several times. There is no guaranteed crossing date because animal movements depend heavily on rainfall and grazing conditions. November–December — Return toward the south With the arrival of seasonal rains, many herds begin moving south through the Serengeti again, eventually returning toward the southern plains and beginning the cycle once more. One of the greatest animal movements on Earth Around 1.3 million wildebeest, together with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, move through the ecosystem during the annual cycle. There is no true beginning or end to the Great Migration. The animals are constantly responding to rainfall, water availability and fresh grazing. Most importantly, the majority of the annual migration cycle occurs within Tanzania's greater Serengeti ecosystem, although many herds can enter Kenya's Masai Mara during part of the year. Wildebeest can sense where conditions are changing Wildebeest don't follow a calendar. Their movements respond to environmental signals, especially rainfall and the growth of nutritious grasses. This means nobody can say that the migration will be in one exact location on a particular day. Rainfall can change the movement of the herds from one year to another. That unpredictability is part of what makes the migration genuinely wild. Why zebras and wildebeest travel together One fascinating feature is the relationship between zebras and wildebeest. Zebras can consume taller and tougher grasses, while wildebeest tend to prefer shorter, nutrient-rich growth. As large mixed herds move across the plains, different grazers can make use of different parts of the vegetation. They also gain some protection from travelling in enormous groups because there are more animals watching for predators. The migration includes an enormous baby boom Around January to March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains become one of the most fascinating places in the migration cycle. This is the main wildebeest calving season. Hundreds of thousands of calves are born during the broader season, with births becoming highly concentrated during the peak period. Wildebeest calves are remarkably well adapted to life on the open plains. They become mobile very quickly because remaining close to the moving herd is essential for survival. The predators are part of the story The migration supports one of the world's most famous predator-prey ecosystems. Lions may position themselves near concentrations of grazing animals. Cheetahs benefit from the open plains, where their speed can be particularly effective. Hyenas are both skilled hunters and scavengers and play an important ecological role. Leopards are more solitary and are often associated with areas offering trees and suitable cover. The migration therefore isn't only a wildebeest spectacle. It supports an entire food web. River crossings are spectacular but unpredictable The Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti are probably the most famous images associated with the Great Migration. But there is an important fact that photographs don't always show: The animals may wait near a river for hours or even days before crossing. Some groups may approach and then move away. Others may cross and later cross back. There isn't one single crossing that happens on a predetermined date. This is why experienced safari guides pay attention to herd locations, weather, grazing conditions and recent animal movements rather than relying only on a calendar. The animals actually help shape the Serengeti The migrating herds are part of the ecological system that maintains these grasslands. As animals graze, move and return nutrients to the soil, they influence vegetation and nutrient cycling. Their presence also supports predators, scavengers, insects and other organisms. So the Great Migration isn't simply something happening inside the Serengeti ecosystem. It is one of the processes that helps make the Serengeti what it is. Rain is one of the migration's great drivers You can think of the migration as a giant wildlife journey guided by rain and grass. Rain falls → fresh grass develops → grazing animals respond → predators follow the concentrations of prey. As conditions dry, the herds continue searching for suitable grazing and water. Then seasonal rains eventually encourage movement back toward the southern plains, and the cycle continues. Tanzania offers several completely different migration experiences In Serengeti National Park and the surrounding ecosystem, the experience changes dramatically throughout the year. Southern Serengeti & Ndutu: calving, enormous herds and predator activity. Central Serengeti: year-round resident wildlife alongside periods when migrating herds pass through. Western Corridor: westward and northward movement, including the Grumeti area. Northern Serengeti: large herds and the possibility of Mara River crossings. This means there isn't necessarily one single “best” migration experience. Someone fascinated by newborn animals might prefer the calving season, while someone interested in river crossings may prefer northern Serengeti when the herds are in that region.
