Safari Planning: Itineraries and Accommodation

Recommended Itineraries
Route 1: The Classic Safari (7–10 Days)
Focus: Kruger National Park & The Panorama Route
Day 1-2: The Panorama Route. Fly into Johannesburg and drive toward Graskop. Spend two days visiting Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes, and God’s Window. This helps you acclimate before the safari.
Day 3-6: Kruger National Park. Enter via Phabeni or Paul Kruger Gate. Spend 3 nights at a rest camp (such as Skukuza or Lower Sabie) for a self-drive experience.
Day 7-9: Private Reserve Luxury. Move to a private reserve in the Greater Kruger (Sabi Sands or Timbavati). This is where you get the guided open-vehicle drives and high-end dining.
Day 10: Fly out of Skukuza (SZK) or Hoedspruit (HDS) back to Johannesburg.
Route 2: The Family & Coast Loop (8–12 Days)
Focus: Cape Town, Garden Route, and Malaria-Free Addo
Day 1-4: Cape Town. Table Mountain, Cape Point, and the penguins at Boulders Beach.
Day 5-7: The Garden Route. Drive to Knysna or Plettenberg Bay. Visit the Tsitsikamma Storms River mouth and enjoy whale watching (in season).
Day 8-10: Addo Elephant Park. End your trip with a safari in Addo. It is malaria-free, and the roads are excellent for standard rental cars.
Day 11-12: Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). Relax by the beach before flying back.
Accommodation Types Explained
1. SANParks Rest Camps (Budget to Mid-Range)
Managed by South African National Parks, these are the most affordable and authentic options.
- Style: Simple round huts (Rondavels), cottages, or campsites.
- Facilities: Communal or private braai (BBQ) areas, shared or en-suite bathrooms, and often a park shop and restaurant.
- Pros: Very affordable; located inside the park gates so you can start driving at sunrise.
2. Luxury Safari Lodges (High-End)
Found mostly in private reserves (Sabi Sands, Kapama, or Thornybush).
- Style: Ultra-luxurious "glamping" tents or stone suites with private plunge pools.
- Inclusions: Usually "Fully Inclusive"—includes all meals, drinks, and two guided game drives per day with an expert tracker and ranger.
- Pros: Off-road driving (gets you closer to the animals) and incredible service.
3. Guest Houses and B&Bs (Mid-Range)
Common in "Gateway Towns" like Marloth Park (Kruger), Hoedspruit, or Addo.
- Style: Boutique rooms in private homes or small estates.
- Pros: Personalized advice from local hosts and a cozy atmosphere.
Estimated Daily Budgets (Excluding Flights)
- Budget (Camping/Self-Catering): $60 – $100 per person/day.
- Mid-Range (B&Bs + SANParks Cottages): $150 – $250 per person/day.
- Luxury (All-inclusive Private Lodges): $500 – $1,500+ per person/day.
Key Planning Tips
1. Book Early: SANParks accommodation inside Kruger and Addo often books out 11 months in advance for peak season (December and July).
2. Rent a Higher Vehicle: While you can drive a sedan in most parks, renting a small SUV (like a Toyota Rav4 or similar) gives you a better vantage point for spotting animals over the tall grass.
3. Gate Times: National Parks have strict gate closing times (usually sunset). If you are late, you may be fined or barred from entry for the night.
