Where to stay in Johannesburg

We are in Johannesburg for 5 days in May 2026 and are wondering where we should stay to enjoy the best the city has to offer. We love being able to walk around, but definitely want to be safe especially in the evenings. My reasons for asking are based on something a South African traveler said to me recently about the safety of Johannesburg. It actually put me off a bit. Thank you for any help and suggestions.
